Group to honor civilian who saved woman’s life

WESTMINSTER – Crime Survivors will recognize 37 law enforcement officials, deputy district attorneys and investigators and victims advocates during its annual awards banquet Friday night at the Rose Center.

This year’s banquet will also honor a civilian, which is a rarity at these events, said co-chair and Westminster Police Officer Cameron Knauerhaze. Christian Conrad will be honored for saving the life of a woman, a domestic violence victim, whose ex-boyfriend was bashing her head against the concrete curb of a street in Ladera Ranch, Knauerhaze said. The incident occurred in June 2009, he said.

The man continued to strike the victim even after Conrad approached the man and told him repeatedly to let go, he said. Finally, Conrad had to put the other man in a choke-hold and pin him down to the ground, Knauerhaze said.

“(Conrad) was nominated for this award by an Orange County sheriff’s detective,” he said. “We just thought he absolutely deserved this award because he went above and beyond what anyone would normally do in that situation.”

Friday’s event will be hosted by Tanya Brown, sister of Nicole Brown Simpson. Crime Survivors is a nonprofit that serves as an advocate for crime victims and their families. This week, April 18-24 has been observed as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
